Why this matters for logistics teams
Not every cost problem is solved by negotiating a lower rate. Sometimes the better lever is packaging, equipment and flow design. If empty space, awkward cargo shape or reverse logistics is the hidden problem, a lower linehaul rate will not fix the network.
For ecommerce and 3PL teams, the comparable lesson is cartons, totes, pallets, returns containers and trailer cube. Better physical design can reduce truck moves and warehouse handling before a bid event even starts.
What operators should do now
- Identify lanes where empty packaging, totes or containers move too often.
- Review whether returnable packaging can be collapsed, nested or pooled.
- Measure warehouse and yard space consumed by empty equipment.
- Include handling labor and dwell time when comparing packaging options.
- Treat packaging engineering as part of freight cost control, not only product protection.
