Cost structure / standard tiers
ASN costs usually appear as direct chargebacks or indirect receiving delays.
| ASN Issue | Typical Cost Range | Receiving Impact |
|---|---|---|
| Missing ASN | $100-$500/shipment | Manual receiving required |
| Late ASN | $50-$250/PO | Dock appointment may be held or delayed |
| Carton count mismatch | $25-$100/PO plus audit time | Quantity reconciliation needed |
| Invalid SSCC/carton IDs | $5-$25/carton | Scan receiving fails |
Large retailers often enforce ASN rules per purchase order, while 3PLs may bill manual receiving labor separately.
Risk mitigation / operational guidance
Send the ASN after final cartonization, not before pick-pack is complete, because early ASNs often diverge from physical cartons. Validate PO, SKU, carton count, carrier, PRO/tracking number, and ship date before transmission. For EDI retailers, run test ASNs before the first live shipment and confirm the retailer can parse every segment. If using a 3PL, assign ownership for ASN release timing so the warehouse and seller do not both assume the other party sent it.
